Students who are able to produce ACT scores in the top 25% of a given university's applicant pool will have the strongest odds of admission. Upper-percentile ACT scores vary considerably, and students should therefore set score goals that reflect typical ACT performance at their chosen institutions. Providence College, for example, reports a middle-50% ACT score range of 23-28, and an applicant to this school with an ACT score of 29 would be a very strong candidate for admission. At Brandeis University, however, a 29 is only in the 25th percentile of all accepted students (middle-50% scores at Brandeis are 29-33), and applicants to this school should therefore set higher score goals. At Brown University, where the middle-50% ACT scores are 31-34, an applicant with a composite ACT score of 29 would likely not be competitive. University applicants should therefore begin the ACT preparation process by establishing score goals that realistically account for the expectations of their preferred programs.
